During
the many years that working took up most of our time, volunteer work or
other "fun" activities were quite limited. Spare time was used to catch
up on chores and caring for the children, driving the kids to school, to
a baseball game or other activities. Years were spent providing for
other members of the family, and we never seemed to get everything done
that we wanted to squeeze into each day.
In later years, after the kids are grown and have left the nest, it's
time to put away the work clothes and focus on what we'd like to do with
our own time. As mentioned in l ast
month's Dreamscapes, volunteerism is one good way to use our free time.
Another is to partake of the many activities that are an important part
of living in a retirement community.
Let's take a look at the many activities that take place at Legacy of
Leesburg, one of the Pringle communities, as an example. If you want to
spend your time outdoors enjoying the Florida sunshine, there's the
Garden Club or monthly golf outings. And there is pickleball, softball,
swimming, horseshoes or bocce. For those who'd like to do something
about losing that extra weight, walking away the pounds with your
neighbor on Legacy's beautiful nature trails will help (as long as you
don't overeat at the frequent potluck or early bird dinners!). Don't
care for athletics, but like to socialize? There's the Travel Club,
bingo, bridge, poker, or the monthly movie. Or, if you want to try your
hand at a skill, try ceramics, the Computer Club, one-stroke painting,
or quilting.
These
are just a few of the many clubs and activities designed to give
residents a chance to catch up on things they never had time to do
before. In any Pringle community, you will find a long list of
activities. Royal Harbor is located on Little Lake Harris, where the
beauty of one of Lake County's largest lakes can be enjoyed. Legacy of
Leesburg has many areas where Florida's nature has been preserved.
If you have a special interest that is not expressed in one of the
dozens of clubs and activities, you can work with the Activities
Director to develop such an activity. For example, if you have a hobby
such as collecting antiques or stamps, and you want to encourage others
to join in with you to appreciate that hobby, all it takes is a meeting
with the director to add your favorite hobby to the activities list.
When you consider becoming a resident of a Pringle community, be sure to
check out the daily activity list. Retirement is the time to catch up on
all the activities you wanted to do but had to put off because you
didn't have time or had other responsibilities during those working
years.
