 On December 2nd, there were reports that about 40 tons of snow was dumped near the Citrus Tower in Clermont.
It wasn’t one of those unusual snowstorms but a celebration honoring the 50th birthday of the Citrus Tower. The tower was built in 1956, atop one of the highest hills in Florida’s ridge section, and for years provided an excellent view of the many citrus groves that covered the area. The landmark contains 5 million pounds of concrete and was constructed to withstand winds of more than 190 mph. The original plans called for the tower to be 75 feet, but it ended up 226 feet high, with an additional antenna that made it 500 feet above sea level.
To honor the tower, Greg Homan, its present owner, decided to throw a spectacular event for the occasion. In addition to the snow, there were dozens of booths and activities from face painting and rides for the kids, to displays of all types. A number of live rock and roll bands performed on the large stage built for the occasion at the foot of the tower. Danny and the Juniors, (“At the Hop”) and Johnny Thunder of The Drifters, (“Save the Last Dance for Me”) entertained the crowds at the celebration. Of course, the event also included a visit by Santa and Mrs. Claus. The activities began at 3 PM and ended with a large fireworks display that could be seen from miles away. The fireworks were fired from south of the tower, off its top, and moved up and down the tower sides, accompanied by a musical symphony scored for the occasion.
The Citrus Tower is one of Central Florida’s unique attractions, along with the Hall of Presidents located adjacent to the tower. In addition, the tower houses Santiago’s Restaurant, a very popular Mexican eatery.
