Citrus Tower Celebration |
|
On December 2nd, there were reports that about 40 tons of snow was dumped near the Citrus Tower in Clermont.
It wasn’t one of those unusual snowstorms but a celebration honoring the 50th birthday of the Citrus Tower. The tower was built in 1956, atop one of the highest hills in Florida’s ridge section, and for years provided an excellent view of the many citrus groves that covered the area. The landmark contains 5 million pounds of concrete and was constructed to withstand winds of more than 190 mph. The original plans called for the tower to be 75 feet, but it ended up 226 feet high, with an additional antenna that made it 500 feet above sea level.

Tom and Judy McFall
It’s the height of the softball season here in Central Florida, and Tom McFall, a resident of Legacy of Leesburg, is very busy serving as Manager of one of the community’s teams. He is also the Chairman of the Softball Committee.
Tom was born in Poteau, Oklahoma, and his wife Judy was born in Chicago, Illinois. They spent most of their married life in the Denver, Colorado area. After serving 4 years in the Navy as a 3rd Class Petty Officer, Tom gained a lot of experience coaching Little League, other sports teams, and as an official for high school football. Tom spent 40 years in the banking industry, beginning as a teller and attaining the position of Operations Supervisor for the First Bank of Colorado before retirement. Judy was also a teller at the same bank as Tom for 4 years. Taking a break to raise their two sons, she returned to Lakeside National Bank in Denver and became a supervisor of tellers for 24 years before retiring in 2001.

The Goblin Market |
|
Tucked away among lots of foliage on Dora Drawdy Lane in Mount Dora is The Goblin Market, a popular restaurant with both locals and visitors since it first opened ten years ago.
This restaurant gets its name from a 13-page poem written by Christina Rossetti, which tells about goblins tempting ladies to buy their wares in the market.
There are two small dining rooms on the first floor, lined with art and beautiful bookcases, reminiscent of dining in a cozy room at a friend’s home. Located off one of the dining areas, French doors lead you into a lovely garden courtyard with seating outside at tables with umbrellas surrounded by gorgeous plants. Goblin’s unique floor plan offers several choices of seating from inside to alfresco.

Activity Corner - Many Thanks |
|
I would like to thank all of the Legacy residents for giving me such a warm welcome as their new Activities Director - I do appreciate your support. In the few short months that I have been at this desk I realized just how active and busy 2006 was for this remarkable group of residents.
Residents gathered at the Social Hall to review the year’s accomplishments and plan activities for the year ahead with more new residents increasing our community population. I would like to list just a few of the activities that I have observed during my tenure: - The Welcome Committee met with over 190 new residents in 2006.
- 2,100 Holiday cards were sent overseas to our troops.
- The Aluminum Can Recycling Group added $1,200 to the community funds from the recycling program.
And the list goes on with numerous parties, special group events, community improvement projects, and travel trips heather and yon. Quite an exciting year!
I’m looking forward to the adventures and challenges that the New Year will bring as your Activities Director.
-Chad Peck, Activity Director
