What Makes Lake County Such An Attractive Place To Live? One of the most frequently asked questions we here from folks who are not familiar with Central Florida is: Why would someone who is thinking of moving to Florida want to consider living in Lake County?

In addition to its rural charm and its proximity to all of the best that Florida has to offer, the facts and information that follow should help you understand what makes Lake County such an attractive place to live:

  • There are more than 1400 named lakes that cover 202 square miles of the total 1162 square miles that make up Lake County. Many of these lakes are part of the Ocklawaha chain of lakes, allowing boaters to travel from Lake Griffin to the St. John's River and eventually to the Atlantic Ocean. They provide many excellent opportunities for boating and fishing activities.

  • There are more that 20 state, city and county parks located throughout the county, providing a large selection of outdoor activities, such as camping, hiking, nature walks, swimming, tennis, etc.

  • Lake County has three modern hospitals that provide excellent health care, and in the last few years, they have expanded their facilities, keeping up with all of the latest technology.

  • The elevation of Lake County ranges from 50 feet to 190 feet above sea level, so that bicycling, hiking and golf can be enjoyed in most areas. Golfers can choose from over 23 public golf courses and country clubs that offer challenging golf all year round.

  • At last count, there were more than 200 houses of worship of all denominations located in the county.

  • There are several annual outdoor sporting events in the area, such as golf tournaments, water-skiing and equestrian events, triathlon meets, and even some ski-diving competitions. In addition, if you are looking for an exciting change of pace, you can take lessons in parasailing, water-skiing and glider riding. It's all available right here in Lake County.

  • Lake-Sumter Community College in Leesburg hosts several musical and theatrical productions, as well as sporting events, and their adult education programs provide personal growth courses at low cost.

  • The average temperature in the winter in Lake County is 75 degrees Fahrenheit - making it just a bit more pleasant than some of the sub-freezing temperatures that we're seeing up north this year! It's great for those of us who appreciate year-round gardening. The warmer summer temperatures are made comfortable by the light breezes that drift through the rolling hills of Lake County.

  • The county's central location provides easy access to all of the attractions in the area. Residents can reach both the east and west coasts of Florida in just about an hour, and Orlando's major attractions are close enough for frequent visits.

  • There are special events and points of interest nearby: the Lakeridge Winery, antique markets, Antique Carriage Museum, several theatres, and festivals planned for every month of the year.

  • If you enjoy dining out, you'll find more than 300 restaurants that offer a world-wide range of cuisine, and new ones opening their doors every month.

  • Finally, many of our retired residents are happy to find that there is a lot of demand for experienced part-time help here in the county, and that there are hundreds of agencies that need the support of volunteers, such as hospitals, food banks, law enforcement, and mentoring programs.

In next month's issue, we'll try to answer another frequently asked question: How do Pringle Development communities differ from other communities in the area?
