Reader’s Theatre

Have you ever had thoughts of being an actor or actress but had trouble memorizing lines or had stage fright? Last summer, Reader’s Theatre was introduced to Legacy of Leesburg by fellow residents, Mike and Annie Kelley, bringing to the group 30 years of theatre experience.

Reader’s Theatre was originally developed as a way of introducing kids to theatre concepts. It differs from the “normal” theatre experience in several ways. First of all, readers (or performers) are actually reading their parts from a script during the performance, requiring no memorization. Secondly, no physical movements are performed, allowing anyone that may have physical difficulties a chance to participate. Third, the reader is not the character, so anyone can read a part for which they may not have the right physical characteristics. For example, a younger person can read the part of an older person, or a woman can read a male part. One reader can actually take the role of more than one character, if there are more characters than there are people present for the reading.

Gracie’s Backporch Café

Gracie’s Backporch Café in downtown Tavares is not only a popular local restaurant, but is also an art gallery. The walls of this restaurant are covered with beautiful metal sculptures created by owner Bill Squires, as well as paintings by local artist Anita Woods. Bill has a work shop in the back of the building where he works his magic with metal. He has been in the metal sculpting business for 35 years, and at the Tavares location for about 3 years.

His niece, Amanda, and sister-in-law, Sharon Kelly operates the Café. It is open only for lunch Monday-Friday from 11 AM until 3 PM. The Café seats about 70 people and does a brisk business every day. On the day we visited, we arrived early and found the restaurant was almost filled to capacity.

Activity Corner - Getting Involved

The 2007 Activity calendar for Pringle communities is off to a great start. It will be an active year as our communities grow with new residents and new ideas for clubs appealing to a variety of interests.

For instance, Legacy of Leesburg has formed a new cycling group and Royal Harbor has followed Legacy’s lead by also forming a theatre group.

Want to meet your neighbors...join them at the many monthly “feasts”...from Pancake breakfasts, Pot-luck dinners to regional club get togethers. For those who like crafts there are painting classes, ceramics, quilting, Bunka (Japanese embroidery), all sorts of card games such as Mahjonng, Hearts, Poker, Bridge, or Hand and Foot.

Travel clubs are very popular, offering reduced group rates to the residents and a wonderful way to travel with old and new community friends. The destinations include cruises, travel in Europe and abroad as well as day trips to local areas of interest like St. Augustine or Sarasota.

Getting involved takes time and can be a little overwhelming, however, you will be surprised how quickly you will find just the right group to fit into your schedule...making that schedule as busy or un-busy as you wish!

-Chad Peck, Activity Director
