Leesburg's Mardi Gras Celebration |
|
Featured "...Masquerades, Parades, Beads, Cajun Food, and Plenty of
Music"
Every year during this time, people
flock to New Orleans to celebrate the well-known event known as Mardi
Gras (an expression from the French meaning “Fat Tuesday”). This
“Carnival” began in 1827, when a group of students, recently returning
from school in Paris, donned strange costumes and danced through the
streets. The first description of a Mardi Gras parade is of a single
float in 1839, and the event continued to grow with each passing year.
But traveling to New Orleans to enjoy Mardi
Gras was not necessary for Central Floridians recently because Mardi
Gras was celebrated in Leesburg during the weekend of February 7-8. For
the sixth year in a row, the Leesburg Mardi Gras was held complete with
masquerades, parades, beads, Cajun food and plenty of music.

“What
Am I Doing Here?”
Now,
there’s a question that many of us have asked ourselves whenever we are
in a place where we question why we are there in the first place.
When I
see the nightly weather reports from up north, it reminds me of two
events where I asked myself that very question.

Those Who’ve Come Before You

These
"Native Floridians" Would Be Happy To Introduce You To The Legacy
Lifestyle.
For
Bobby and Jean Poe, it took only one visit to Legacy of Leesburg before
they decided to become a member of the community. They were looking for
a community that had tennis courts, a large pool, and a gym so that they
could keep themselves fit. Because of these facilities, Bobby can be
found on the tennis court usually two to three times a week, and Jean
visits the recreation center every day for daily exercise. She enjoys
meeting with other ladies for group exercise using the tapes that are
available.
Jean
is a native Floridian, having been raised in Sanford, Florida. Bobby,
however, was born in Corona, Alabama but moved to nearby Wildwood,
Florida when he was 7 years old. His father was employed by the railroad
and worked in this area for many years. Jean and Bobby met in high
school, and made their home in Wildwood until 1989, when they moved to
Lakeland.

Mt.
Dora's "Frosty Mug" Icelandic Pub and Restauraunt
“A
romantic European underground setting with an Old World Charm” is the
description used for The Frosty Mug Icelandic Pub and Restaurant located
in nearby Mt. Dora.
We
visited this cozy restaurant for lunch recently and found it to be as
described. Thora Einarsson and her sister, Maria Blair, have been
involved for years in the restaurant business. Thora came from Iceland
about 20 years ago and is a former member of the police department.
Maria arrived in 1999, and that’s when their idea of an Icelandic Pub
came to fruition, opening in 2000. It is located in the cellar of the
Renaissance Building at 411 N. Donnelly Street.
