For those in the North, spring represents
the disappearance of snow and freezing temperatures, planning outdoor
activities, and spring cleaning. In the South, where there are more
outdoor activities during the winter, the onset of spring causes an
increase in the number of activities for "children" of all ages.
To begin with, the City of Leesburg's Parks
& Recreation Department offers year-round activities geared toward all
age groups. For children, there are several softball leagues, as well as
a number of activities at the Venetian Gardens swimming pool, such as
aquacising, scuba diving and lifeguard training. Adults also enjoy
participating in softball leagues and water safety courses.
Instructional programs for adults include dog obedience training, umpire
classes, karate, and even a course in learning to play the mountain
dulcimer. Many residents are attracted to the adult golf or volleyball
and the industrial softball leagues.
For other outdoor activities, you might like
to visit the Lake County Farmers Market, a weekly event in Eustis where
you can shop for a variety of products ranging from apples to ziti.
Those who would like to enjoy Central Florida's natural beauty can
cruise the famous Dora Canal, visit one of the many nearby State and
County parks, or attend special events such as the Mt. Dora Antique Car
& Boat Show being held on the weekend of March 18th. During the
Saturdays in March, Silver Springs in Ocala will hold their Adventure &
Nature Tour that allows you to enjoy the crystal clear springs and
abundant wildlife as you cruise along the Oklahawa River. In nearby
Weirsdale, the Austin Horse Park is holding their Country Hoe Down Jam
Sessions every second and fourth Tuesday of the month for the rest of
the year. For those sprucing up their garden, Clermont's First Friday
event on April 1st will present a "Home & Garden" show, where visitors
can learn gardening tips, enjoy local dancers or the display of antique
cars, and get a bite to eat at the same time. Eustis also has their
First Friday Evening events during the next few months, with stage
entertainment on the downtown streets and plenty of other activities. On
the same weekend, Thomas the Train returns to the tracks in Tavares.
For theater-goers, Mt. Dora's Ice House
Theatre is presenting "Look Homeward Angel" in April. The Melon Patch
Playhouse in Leesburg will present the musical "Mame," and the Warehouse
Theatre in Clermont is presenting "Nunsense," a hilarious talent show
put on by the little sisters of Hoboken Nunnery.
The Lakeridge Winery always has musical
programs planned throughout the year. In April, their "Blues at the
Winery" will be presented, along with plenty to eat and wine-tasting.
This is just a brief list of the many activities that attract both
visitors and residents to Lake County. There is really "something for
everyone" in the areas of sports, cultural, natural, artistic or just
relaxation interests. As a visitor, you can sample any of these
activities, but as a resident, you can be sure that every week there
will be plenty to do in the area!
Visit Lake County's website at
www.lakecountyfl.com for more information on these and other
fun-filled activities. Happy Springtime!
