Those Who’ve Come Before You |

The field of education has been very important to Mary Lindsay, a new resident who moved into Lakes of Mt. Dora at the end of last year. She has devoted her life towards helping both her students and other teachers develop the techniques of problem solving.
Mary was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky, but lived in Brownsville and Louisville before coming to Central Florida. After teaching English for one year in her home high school, Edmonson County, she moved to Louisville and taught biology and anatomy and physiology for 32 years at Pleasure Ridge Park High School. Besides teaching, she served as an Academic Competition Coordinator and as a coach for future problem-solving in her school. In addition, she was a State Trainer and Evaluator for the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition, and was instrumental in training teachers in the techniques of problem solving.

Learning A New Skill |
|
Many people are familiar with the dice game called Bunko (sometimes spelled Bunco), but at Legacy of Leesburg, there is a different type of activity called Bunka.
Bunka Shishu is an art form that originated in Japan, and it is best described as Japanese punch needle art embroidery. A Bunka picture resembles an oil painting, but, on closer inspection, it is actually a beautiful piece of stitchery. With the use of a specialized punch needle and rayon thread, pictures of scenes, ships, flowers, animals and oriental motifs are all available for the beginner, as well as the advanced student of the art. There are different levels of Bunka, and beginners usually start with a canvas that has a printed picture outline with numbered sections, much like the “paint-by-number” kits that are popular with beginning artists. After much practice, students in the art use kits that have picture outlines without numbers called Matsuhato kits, and the resulting pictures are some of the most beautiful works of art, with as much detail as any oil painting.

Café Boquete |
|
It’s always nice to see a new “non-chain” restaurant join the neighborhood. A recent addition to the Clermont area is Café Boquete, located on Citrus Tower Boulevard near Route 50.
A friend recommended this new up-scale café specializing in coffees from around the world. Their coffee is served either hot or over ice and for you tea lovers, an assortment of Harney and Sons Gourmet Teas are available. What makes the décor of the Café a little different is that each booth has a “theme” table top, dedicated to a coffee producing country such as Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama (where the name “Bouquete” originated), Hawaii and some African nations as well.

Activity Corner - Join the Fun! |
|
Legacy of Leesburg’s special events calendar has been very full this winter. As the community has grown, so have the activities.
In January the Ceramics Club sponsored a mystery dinner theatre show, “Who Dunnit? A Murder with Extra Cheese”...what a success! Everyone enjoyed an evening of fun, food and fantastic entertainment; February was the “Sweethearts Dance” (naturally) featuring a live band and a dance-off competition.
This month the schedule includes a “Health Fair” with over 30 healthcare organizations setting up screenings to help you continue to live a healthy lifestyle.
Also on the schedule is a trip to Sea World and luncheons featuring guest speakers from Sea World and Busch Gardens, who always bring along their animal friends.
These special events are in addition to the numerous scheduled daily classes from water aerobics to the new Bunka art classes. Come join the fun...after all, isn’t that what retirement is all about?
