Amtrak Auto Train

Back to Articles

When we moved to Florida from up north, our children had moved on with their lives and we were able to make the move. Over the years, our sons had a total of six children, so the desire to return to our hometown became stronger.

We enjoy the lifestyle that comes with living in Central Florida, but still enjoy visiting the grandchildren as often as we can. To do this, there are several options offered to those who find it difficult to move away from family.

First of all, Orlando International Airport is within an hour's drive from Lake County, and there are plenty of flights daily to all points north and west. For those who do not enjoy flying, there are many Interstate roads that allow traveling by car if you do not mind driving. We have also found traveling back to our hometown, that traveling by way of the Delmarva Peninsula and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, save miles, as well as avoids the possible traffic that occurs on I-95 around Washington and Baltimore.

If you’re headed north from Florida, many people are not aware of Amtrak’s Auto Train. The train leaves every afternoon at 4 PM from Sanford, FL and arrives in Lorton, VA (just south of Washington, D.C.) the next morning. You can ride coach or book a private bedroom and sleep while the train travels through the night. We use this method frequently, which allowed us to visit our six grandchildren in New York and New Jersey six times last year.

If the Florida lifestyle attracts you but you’re hesitant about making the move, check out the various options that will make it easier for you to have it both ways…life in sunny Central Florida…and frequent visits with loved ones still living in “cold country”!
