LOCALLY FILMED MOVIES

Did you know that “Hollywood” came to Mount Dora?

In 1980, scenes for the movie Honky Tonk Freeway were filmed in downtown Mount Dora. The entire downtown was painted pink and 2,000 local townspeople were signed on as extras. Bubbles the elephant water-skied in Lake Dora and a rhinoceros was used as part of the scene. (Can you imagine the town painted PINK today?)

An Italian horror film, Witch Story was filmed in Mount Dora in 1989, which apparently was never shown in the United States.

In 1999, downtown Mount Dora was used again in the filming of Olive Juice, which starred Leighann Littrell, the wife of Brian Littrell of The Backstreet Boys.

Cable TV also showed scenes from Mount Dora in two pictures, one of which was aired on HBO. The Break, a movie about tennis, was filmed in 1995. Breaking the Pack, a movie in which a murder is committed and the five friends responsible make a pact never to tell what happened, was completed in 2001.

The popular movie Cool Hand Luke was not filmed here in 1967, but was based on the true story by Donn Pearse, about a man in a chain gang that refused to conform to life at the Tavares Town Prison.

The next time you go to the movies, keep your eyes open to the background…you just might see familiar surroundings.
