The Culinary Couple

When we hear the term “Great Wall”, most people think of the Great Wall that was built thousands of years ago in China. Here in Leesburg, it refers to a Chinese restaurant that is located on Route 27 in the Southside Plaza. It’s called “Great Wall Authentic Chinese Restaurant”, and it’s well worth a visit.

This quiet little restaurant has been at this location for several years, but it has been under new management for the last year and a half. It is a simple, storefront restaurant, but it is attractively decorated with colorful tapestries, sculptures and Chinese lanterns.

My spouse and I had heard good things about the restaurant from friends, so we decided to give it a try. We stopped in for lunch and found it to be very enjoyable. The prices certainly were reasonable - only $4.25 for a combination luncheon, which included one egg roll, one bowl of rice - white or fried- and one entrée choice per person. They offered a selection of six entrees, but we both ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken (the Seafood Delight and Cashew Chicken will have to wait for another visit). Other choices included Pepper Steak, Sweet and Sour Pork, and Pork Lo Mein.

We were also surprised to learn that our orders included a choice of soups and the salad bar. The salad bar was small, but in additional to the typical salad items, it included delicious peel and eat shrimp.

As you can tell, we had more than enough to eat! The Sweet and Sour Chicken was freshly prepared and arrived rather quickly. At the end of our meal, we were treated to traditional fortune cookies.

The Great Wall offers everything that you would expect to find on a Chinese menu, such as pork, seafood, chicken and beef dishes, Lo Mein, Chop Suey, Egg Foo Young and Chow Mein. Their dinner combination platters range from $6 to $7, which includes all of the side dishes. Family dinners are also available - with 11 entree selections from which to choose. House specials include Szechuan Scallops, Szechuan Shrimp, General Tsao’s Chicken and Moo Goo Gai Pan.

The restaurant is open Monday to Friday for lunch and dinner, and we noticed several patrons come in for takeout orders.
