30th Annual Mount Dora Arts Festival

Back to Articles

It was a beautiful, slightly cool weekend February 5th and 6th...the streets were filled with people strolling among hundreds of tents featuring music, food and a large variety of arts and crafts.

An estimated 300,000 artists and visitors came from all parts of the country to enjoy the Florida sunshine and explore the many art forms on display at the 30th Annual Mount Dora Arts Festival. Works included pottery, drawings, jewelry, painting, photography and sculpture created by over 285 talented artists.

This popular event was sponsored by the Mount Dora Center for the Arts, which was formed "to foster an understanding and appreciation of art and culture through exhibitions, art festivals, and educational programs." The first festival, held in 1975, was so successful, it was decided to make it an annual event.

In addition to the artists, over a dozen bands played on the main stage, while various street musicians entertained visitors throughout the festival. Several food courts satisfied visitors' appetites, and a special stage was set up for individual artists to show their skills.

How many of you recall watching the original "Superman" shows that featured George Reeves as Superman and Noel Neill as Lois Lane? Noel, who is now 84 years young, was present at the festival, appearing at Uncle Al's Time Capsule, a small memorabilia shop. She was most gracious meeting visitors and signing copies of her biography, "Truth, Justice and the American Way," a phrase that Superman fans recall from the TV show popular in the '50s. Additional photos of Superman and Lois Lane were available at the shop, and visitors enjoyed having their photo taken with Noel. Few people know that the Noel Neill pin-up photo was the second most popular during World War II, next to the famous image of Betty Grable!

The Arts Festival is one of many events that take place year-round in Central Florida, including those in Leesburg and Eustis. These frequent outdoor events attract many residents and visitors to the area, and give Central Florida residents plenty of opportunity to enjoy the pleasant weather that makes Florida living so attractive.
