Bob Ross Painting Techniques

Back to Articles

The residents of Royal Harbor have the opportunity to learn oil painting by attending a monthly Bob Ross instructional class. On the first Friday of the month, from 12:30-3:30 PM, Kay Lenherr, a certified Bob Ross instructor, guides residents in the "art" of oil painting. Kay is certified to teach landscaping, floral, wildlife and/or portraits There are presently more than 1500 instructors nationwide.

Kay begins each class by showing the first steps in starting a painting. Students then work on his or her own while Kay assists each student individually. Kay then demonstrates the next step on her own painting, and again, the students work on their own to complete that step. When the painting is completed, students sign their work and choose a frame for their masterpiece. Kay explains how different frames can bring out certain colors in the painting, such as a blue frame to enhance the color of a lake. At the end of each session, Kay photographs the group with their paintings.

Sessions have anywhere from 5 to 20 students at a time. The students shown at right completed the entire painting within the three-hour session, as Kay was able to provide plenty of individual help.

Kay's website (www.kaylenherr.com), shows many of the interesting sessions she has conducted. More on the Bob Ross technique can be seen at www.bobross.com

This class is just one of the many activities Royal Harbor residents enjoy. As the community grows, the variety of fun activities does, too, so residents have plenty of ways to socialize and enjoy their retirement years with their neighbors.
