GEORGEFEST 2008

Back to Articles

This year is a special one for the City of Eustis because it is celebrating its 125th Anniversary.

In February, the city celebrated George Washington’s Birthday for the 106th time as part of its anniversary celebration. This annual festival is the longest running Washington’s Birthday festival in the State of Florida, and the second longest running festival in the United States.

The event began on Friday, Feb. 22nd with live entertainment and a fireworks display sponsored by the Lake Mechanical Contractors company. “Family Fun Day” followed on Saturday with bed races, where teams of four pushers and a rider race their beds to the finish line along McDonald Avenue. Other activities included a Grand Parade, amateur dog contest, canoe races, cherry pie eating contest, hot dog eating contest and a citrus squeeze contest in addition to carnival activities. A different type of contest was the “build your own cardboard boat” event with materials supplied for $5 to each participant. As with any festival, plenty of live music and food was available.

The festival concluded on Sunday which was designed as “Family Fun Fiesta Day”. Live entertainment, more food and children’s art projects were displayed at the Eustis Museum of Art.
