LAKE EUSTIS MUSEUM OF ART |

Since 1995, the Lake Eustis Museum of Art has provided artistic opportunities to both adults and children in Eustis. The museum was originally located in a storefront building, but over the years, it has become a larger facility with a board of directors, an executive director, an active auxiliary called Friends of the Museum and a group of daily volunteers.
The Executive Director, Ms. Jackie Houck, came to the museum in October 2007 and has been instrumental in developing and maintaining a number of programs at the Museum. Ms. Houck has a degree in Art History, and gained experience at the Orlando Museum of Art and the Cincinnati Art Museum. She hopes to develop long-term plans for identifying sponsors and promotion opportunities for upcoming art openings and artist demonstrations.

The Lake County Department of Tourism & Business Relations recently unveiled its new 52-page Lake County Vacation Guide to help tourists plan a vacation to this area of Central Florida which boasts hundreds of freshwater lakes and acres of nature preserves.
The guide’s layout is similar to a typical magazine as feature articles help give the reader an in-depth look at some of Lake County’s popular getaway destinations. Another interesting feature in the guide is the itineraries, which suggest two-day excursions for visitors to explore the County’s waterways, cultural attractions and golf courses. In addition to the feature articles and itineraries, the guide has a comprehensive listing of local museums, annual events, art centers, playhouses, boat cruises, parks, golf courses and general attractions.

In February, the city celebrated George Washington’s Birthday for the 106th time as part of its anniversary celebration. This annual festival is the longest running Washington’s Birthday festival in the State of Florida, and the second longest running festival in the United States.

It is intended to attract residents who speak a foreign language, American born residents who have lived overseas, or any other resident who is interested in sharing cultural differences as well as cross cultural experiences. By meeting together, an opportunity is provided to meet and interact with others and to learn more about their culture.

Barbecue has become very popular in Central Florida, and joining this trend is the Backyard Boys Bar-B-Que on Highway 441 in Mount Dora. This new restaurant opened where the former Dixie Shrimp House was located, and already they are enjoying a steady crowd for both lunch and dinner.
The new owner has many years of experience in the restaurant business and previously owned a smaller facility of the same name in Sanford, FL. He wanted to expand his business, so he purchased this location in November 2007, and plans to open another restaurant in Ocala in the near future.
