“Absolutely the most fun you can have for a buck!” That’s the motto of
the Royal Highlands Sharkettes. They’re not Great Whites, and they’re
not Makos, they’re Pool Sharkettes - and they’re all members of the
Ladies Billiard/Pool Club that meets every Monday afternoon in the
Billiard Room at the Recreation Center.
The Club was formed about 18 months ago when Gary Zogg and Harold
Gordon, members of the Men’s Billiard Club, and former teachers, offered
to help the ladies form their own group. They volunteer their services
every Monday to help the ladies develop their skills at the four
billiard tables that are located in the Rec Center.
Each week, the ladies contribute one dollar for the two-hour fun
session, and any lady who forgets to wear her nametag has to donate an
additional 25 cents to the club’s kitty. At present, there are about 20
members, most of whom meet every week. Rosemary Kaskie serves as the
club President, Chris Zogg fills the position of Vice-President, Marilyn
O’Malley keeps track of the finances, and Jozella Collins is the club’s
Secretary.
The Sharkettes play 8 Ball during their summer league, and handicapped 9
Ball during the winter league. Handicapping allows players at all skill
levels to join in the fun. Both leagues currently play only inside the
community, but the group is planning to compete with similar clubs in
other communities in the future.
Although the Sharkettes truly enjoy sharpening their skills on the pool
table, it’s what goes on around the tables that makes it so much fun.
The Billiards Club, like so many other social activities at Royal
Highlands, provides residents with a great opportunity to get together
for a little fun with a few of their neighbors.
To encourage spectators, club members are in the process of obtaining
chairs that are high enough for spectators to see the tops of the tables
during competitions.
The
Men’s Billiard Club, under the direction of John Floor, was formed
almost five years ago. With nearly 40 members, they meet once a year to
discuss the year’s activities, and they hold open Billiards twice a week
in the evening. From November to March, both 9 Ball and 8 Ball leagues
are played in competition with other communities. There are 15 players
in each of the two 9 Ball leagues, and the 8 Ball team (made up of six
players) competes with nine other teams from neighboring communities.
Players within the community compete with each other, and those with the
highest scores are placed on the team that competes with other
communities. After the first and second half of the season takes place,
a
Shoot Out is held, in which the top players compete to determine which
team will hold the title of League Champions.
Within the community of Royal Highlands, tournaments are also held as
fundraisers for the Billiard Activity Fund. It costs $5 per person to
play. Half of the funds collected are used for prizes, while the other
half goes into the club’s treasury.
All of the residents of the Royal Highlands, no matter how much
experience they have, are welcome to join in the fun. Both the ladies
and the men have a great time getting together at the pool tables.
Harold Gordon enjoys the club so much that he recently told us, “It’s so
much fun, it should be illegal!”

you’d like to keep up with what’s going on in both of the Billiards
Clubs, the Royal Highlands Computer Club posts current information about
them and other activities on their website...
