The Culinary Couple

Many of us are familiar with the “Song of Molly Malone” – who sold “cockles and mussels, alive, alive o!” during the early part of the 19th Century in Dublin. According to the legend of Molly Malone, who apparently had quite a following in Ireland, this poem was neatly engraved on her headstone:

Here Beneath This Cold, Hard Stone
Lies Lovely, Lifeless Molly Malone.
Cruelly Snatched From This Vale of Tears
At the Tender Age of Seventeen Years.

Mrs. Kristine Smolinsky, who hails from Wisconsin, and has some Irish ancestry, opened Molly Malones Irish Pub and Restaurant in Mt. Dora this past November. Having some Irish ancestry ourselves, we recently decided to visit the restaurant for lunch. My spouse enjoyed St. Michael’s Cottage Pie, which consisted of ground beef and vegetables in gravy, topped with colcannon (mashed potatoes mixed with cabbage) and Irish Cheddar cheese. I opted for their Dublin Sandwich - tender corned beef brisket on rye bread, baked with cabbage and Cheddar cheese. It was served open-face with sliced tomatoes and pickle. I substituted the chips for a fresh green salad. We were both very pleased with our choices.

Among the dozen or so choices for lunch (which includes daily specials), were Irish Croquettes, with potatoes, cabbage, Irish ham and cheese, and Scotch Eggs offered as an appetizer, which is a hard boiled egg wrapped in pork sausage, served cold with mustard and garnish.

For dinner, you might try Ploughman’s Lamb - lamb simmered in whiskey mint demi with brown bread, colcannon and veggies. Various steaks are also featured, from a blue cheese stuffed Filet Mignon, to a large Porterhouse. All are served with colcannon, a salad or vegetable, and Chef Rhodes Irish Cucumber Salad.

Molly Malones offers a large choice of burgers, chicken dishes, soups, appetizers and sandwiches, in addition to a nice variety of entrees – some prepared a little differently than one might expect.

They also offer live entertainment: Mark and Jeff, a local duo, perform on Thursday; Friday features Paul Evans, an Irish vocalist; and a couple called The Reels, showcase contemporary Irish music on Saturdays.

Seating is available at an outdoor patio, in a large screened area with billiard tables, and in their main dining room. The bar offers liquor, as well as Irish and American beers.
Mrs. Smolinsky graciously offered a 25% discount for either lunch or dinner, to anyone presenting this issue of Dreamscapes.

Molly Malones is located at 421 Baker Street in Mt. Dora, and they are open from 11 AM until about 1 AM.
