The Culinary Couple

Lately, we’ve been hearing more about things like “mad cow disease”, “bird Flu”, and recalls of some mass-produced foods. As a result, some people are looking for organic options - foods grown without the use of chemicals, pesticides, dyes and additives.

Well, now there is a delightful restaurant in Mt. Dora that caters to those who seek “clean cuisine” - the 5th Avenue Cafe and Market, which is located just opposite the park in the downtown area.

My spouse and I recently visited this restaurant for Sunday Brunch, which is served from 10AM-3PM. When we arrived, we found that most of the tables were already occupied. The decor is simple but colorful, and there are 16 floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the dining area with natural light. A second room houses a juice bar, a few more tables, and a nifty fireplace that adds a homey feeling.

We both chose one of the day’s specials; two poached eggs over crab cakes with spinach and a light cream sauce. It was a delicious meal, and Leigh Love, one of three partners in the restaurant, explained that this entree is becoming one of their signature choices. She also indicated that she and her sister, Shinah Bnai, and Tesha Bananda, the Exec. Chef, “are committed to an eatery that cares about its customers, its community and the earth”.

They take great care in selecting their meats, fish and produce. They buy fresh produce and dairy products from Florida farmers, and their fish is caught in open waters, rather than farmed. Their menu often changes to take advantage of fresh, seasonal items.

Only stainless steel cookware is used to assure purity, and all of the water used for preparation and cooking is processed by reverse osmosis and triple filtered. They provide sea salt, organic ketchup, natural sugars, alternative diet drinks, smoothies, and freshly squeezed juices. Latte’s, Espresso, Cappuccino and Mimosas are also listed on the menu.

Breakfast is served from 7:30am to 10:30 am Tues. through Sat.; lunch from 11:30am to 2:30pm, Tues.-Sat.; and dinner hours are from 5pm-9pm, Tues.-Sat. Diners can choose from many creative selections on the menu. Desserts are available, and a list of organic wines and beers complete their offering.
