Remember when a quarter was considered a decent allowance? What about the days when we carried lunch boxes with a thermos? Do your remember eating Kool-Aid dry powder out of the palm of your hand? These were some of the statements that were displayed on each table at a special party that was held recently at Royal Harbor.
There are many reasons why people have parties – birthdays, graduations, New Years, etc. However, this special party was called a “Windfall” party. All of the attendees have or will begin to receive their first Social Security check in 2006, their well earned and welcomed “windfall”.
The evening began with everyone getting to know each other by playing “Name Bingo”. Boxes are drawn in the same manner as a regular Bingo card, and names of those attending were written in the boxes. Names are called instead of numbers to see who gets Bingo first. This activity was followed by a delicious pot luck dinner and when everyone completed the main course, a celebration cake for the “Royal Harbor Babies” was cut and enjoyed by all.
Later in the evening, each attendee was presented with a name-engraved “check” for one million dollars, and the signature on the check was “April Fool”. These checks were kept secret during the party, and were presented as a surprise before the party ended.
The idea for this party actually began when Lou Rothbauer, Nancy Norwood, and Barb Osburn, residents of Royal Harbor, had a small get-together when they and other residents reached the age of 60. It was then they decided to put together a “Windfall” celebration in 2006.The “Windfall” Party is one of the many ways in which incoming and long time residents can meet one another and enjoy the lifestyle that makes the community so friendly.
