Mount Dora Antique Boat Festival

The 20th Annual Mount Dora Antique Boat Festival was held in late March on Lake Dora in Gilbert Park. This festival is the largest antique boat festival in the southeast and one of the largest in the country. Each year a different classic boat manufacturer is featured and this year it was GarWood Custom Boats.

Thousands of visitors flock to this festival each year to see the more than 300 classic and antique boats from 18 different states and Canada. The boats are on display, along with many booths selling a large array of items, such as motors, paddles, lights, pulleys, buoys, and other equipment for antique and classic boats. Amphicars, which are classics that operate on both land and water, were on display and the Florida Antique and Outboard Motor Club displayed a collection of vintage motors along with a nautical flea market.

Bicyclists Pedaling for a Cause

Last month more than 100 bicyclists from the Bike-A-Thon, sponsored by Central Florida Chapter of the Florida Planning and Zoning Association, attended the grand-opening of the 4-mile South Lake Trail.

After the ceremony the participants were encouraged to ride as far as they could on the trail because many of them were receiving donations based on the number of miles they could pedal. All proceeds from the Bike-A-Thon were for the National Center for Boundless Playgrounds, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping communities create specialized playgrounds, such as the one at Lake Idamere Park in Tavares.

Cecile’s French Corner

Dining “Al Fresco” is an enjoyable experience as long as the weather cooperates. One advantage of living in Florida is that this type of dining can be enjoyed most months of the year. On a beautiful ”first day of spring”, we enjoyed a visit to Cecile’s French Corner in downtown Mount Dora, where outdoor dining prevails. Most of their tables are located outside on a patio setting with either large umbrellas or built-in overhang with ceiling fans for protection and cooling. Various small trees and potted plants along a low brick wall give the impression of dining in a well-landscaped garden in France.

Cecile’s menu includes homemade crepes which are served in a rectangular shape, consisting of layers of crepe with a variety of fillings. Some of the luncheon crepe fillings include chicken breast and mushrooms in a cream sauce, or Nova smoked salmon, sour cream and fresh chives. The dessert crepes vary with fruit and cream fillings or chocolate and hazelnut spread.

Editor’s Note

First of all, I want to thank our readers for their continuing interest and support of our newsletter, Community Corner. Last year we gave our monthly newsletter a bit of a “face lift” and received many favorable comments from our readers and appreciate those who took the time to send in their remarks.

Once again we are changing the format by including more articles and information about living in Central Florida and the Florida lifestyle. We are interested in your feedback and would also like to know what type of articles would be of interest to you for future issues.
