CHARIOT RACES IN CENTRAL FLORIDA

Back to Articles

When you hear about Chariot races, one thinks about the movies that show Greek and Roman chariot races and the movie Ben-Hur. Hold on…there’s competition racing right here in Central Florida!

Modern competition began in 1970, called combined carriage driving – an ancient sport dating back to the Greeks and Romans, when Prince Philip of Britain turned to the sport after an injury that ended his polo days. It has evolved into a three-part sport which includes dressage, a cross-country marathon and a “cones” obstacle course.

In the one- or two-horse carriage events, most drivers are women, while the four-horse drivers tend to be men with strong arms and shoulders. The world-class carriage horses cost from $15,000 to more than $100,000. The three-part sport was held over a period of three days, beginning with the dressage. Some spectators came to see the horsemanship, while others enjoyed the antique car show.

The beautiful horses and the extensive car show made it another example of the many enjoyable events that take place each month in Central Florida.
