For Don and Charlotte Ayscue, a casual relationship in a Virginia Beach
high school turned out to be a lifetime commitment.
The Ayscues, who are residents of Legacy of Leesburg, consider traveling
to be an important part of their lives. Don made several moves during
his career in the military and they spent a number of years living full
time in a motor home.
Don served twenty-two years in the U.S. Army, working in the Air Defense
System. His work took him all over the country, as well as Germany,
Scotland, England and Korea. After retiring from the Army, he worked for
General Electric as a Service Engineer for the Diagnostic Imaging
equipment used in hospitals. He was employed by G.E. for twenty years
before retiring... again!
Charlotte worked for a short time at Sears while they were living in El
Paso, Texas. When they moved to Richmond, Virginia, she spent fifteen
years as a Sears Interior Decorator. Charlotte was also a stay-at-home
mom, raising their three children, all of whom still live in Virginia.
One of their sons is a heavy equipment sales representative, their other
son is a Field Service Engineer for G.E., and their daughter is a Legal
Secretary and mother. The Ayscues have a total of 5 grandchildren.
When Don retired in 1993, they began taking long vacations of up to 3 or
4 months, using their motor home. Four years later, they sold their home
and traveled around the country in their motor home. They visited almost
every state of the union, but somehow missed the state of Colorado!
Now that Charlotte and Don are residents of Legacy, they are involved in
many community activities. Charlotte is Chairman of the Bingo Committee,
and Don is the Treasurer. Charlotte enjoys sewing in her specially
designed sewing room, which helps support her passion for interior
decorating. In addition, she likes to do crafts, water aerobics, plays
cards, cooks, and does acrylic and watercolor painting. Don is a golfer,
and he can be found on a local golf course about twice a week. He is
also a fisherman, (usually salt-water), and likes to spend some time on
the computer.
While visiting Florida, Charlotte saw an ad in a local paper with a
floorplan for a home she liked. She had seen a similar plan for a home
in Virginia, but that home was priced higher and was not quite as large.
After visiting Legacy of Leesburg and seeing the home shown in the ad,
they decided to purchase a lot and build the Devonshire model. During
the design phase they made a number of changes, such as replacing a tub
with a shower, adding some bay windows and hardwood floors, enlarging an
office for Don, and of course, they customized the sewing room for
Charlotte.
Don and Charlotte feel that they have the nicest neighbors. Everyone
helps each other, and almost everybody participates in community
activities. They were also pleased to see that so much of the
communities natural environment has been preserved.
