How I Choose a Café or Pub

The age old question, “Where do you want to eat tonight”? The question has become harder and harder to answer as Lake Country continues to grow, so does the choices of food venue grow. As a chef you might think that I would only go to some of the upscale establishments. It may surprise you to know that is not always the case. I read somewhere that choosing a good dining spot does not qualify as one of life’s major decisions! But like all other decisions if you make the right choice, it has its rewards; but if you make a poor choice, you may suffer the consequences.

There are many ways to choose an eatery; one way is to call a friend and ask for their recommendation. I always teach that “word of mouth” is the best advertisement. However, always remember that their taste may not be the same as yours.

Another way is to read the restaurant reviews from newspapers or magazines such as Lake Magazine, The V Magazine, The Lake Sentinel and/or other local publications. Here are some of the standards I look for when choosing a restaurant:

Stop by the café for a look see. Speak to the host, server, or bartender and ask them questions about the restaurant. Ask to see their menu and wine list. I then decide if it fits my needs. Most importantly, I take a look at their restrooms…a bathroom can tell you a lot about a restaurant. After choosing a café, here is how I decide if I will return:

Service: In my opinion service is the most important factor in deciding whether I will return or not.

  • Was I greeted enthusiastically and made to feel welcome?
  • Was I seated promptly or if there was a wait was I given a realistic waiting period?
  • After being seated did the server come to the table promptly?
  • Was the server knowledgeable of the menu and daily specials?
  • Was the order taken correctly and the food served in a reasonable amount of time?
  • Was the server attentive to the needs of the table?
Quality of food:
  • How was the appearance of the food?
  • Was the “hot food hot and the cold food cold?”
  • Of course, how was the taste?

Price:

  • Was the menu priced accordingly?

Atmosphere:

  • How was the décor?
  • Were the staff and other diners friendly?
  • After being seated did the server come to the table promptly?
  • Was I made to feel comfortable?
  • Was the café clean and uncluttered?

Other things I take in consideration when deciding if I will return:

  • Was the check delivered in a timely fashion?
  • Was I thanked for dining at their restaurant?
  • Was I invited back?

In closing I must admit that I feel service is the most important factor in deciding if I will return. I can forgive a mediocre meal but I cannot accept mediocre service.
