THE DORA CANAL: ITS EXPLORATION

A well-known waterway is located in Lake County, where visitors can experience “the most beautiful mile of water in the world”, as was written over 70 years ago by a leading sports writer.

The Dora Canal, which links Lake Dora and Lake Eustis, is lined with towering cypress trees draped with Spanish moss, and is a safe haven for nesting herons, egrets and ospreys. The Canal was originally called the Elfin River, but a steamboat captain, along with a team of laborers, made the waterway passable in the late 1800s.

LAKE COUNTY MUSEUM
OPENING LABYRINTHS EXHIBIT

The Lake County Historical Museum, located at 317 W. Main St. in Tavares, opened its new labyrinths exhibit.

“Experience the peaceful pleasure of a walk through our custom labyrinth,” said Dr. Diane Kamp, Director of Lake County Museums. “Also, explore our unique finger labyrinths.”

Unlike a maze, a labyrinth is designed to be calming and serene; the maze is designed as a puzzle and thereby produces anxiety and trepidation. The new exhibit in Gallery IV of the museum, explains the role labyrinths played in the history of Lake County.

The exhibit will remain open until the end of September. The museum, which features free admission, is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, except holidays. There is always something new to see and do at the Lake County Historical Museum. For more information, log on to www.lakecountyfl.gov, keyword: museum.

DISNEY WORLD’S SHOWER OF FLOWERS

What could be more beautiful than seeing thousands of different flowers blooming in the Springtime?

Visitors and Central Florida residents flock to the annual Flower & Garden Festival at EPCOT Park in Disney World every year. Many types of flowers are displayed in fantastic arrangements as hundreds of master gardeners spend long hours creating masterpieces of flower art for visitors. What makes these displays unique is that many of the flowers are designed into shapes, such as animals or Disney characters.

TALE CHASER GRILLE

There are many lakes and waterways located in Lake County and most boaters enjoy docking at a lakeside restaurant for an occasional meal.

A new waterfront restaurant, Tale Chaser Grille, has recently surfaced on Lake Dora at Lakeshore Blvd in Tavares. They have a nautical theme décor and an open deck outside on the lake’s shoreline to accommodate both boaters and land visitors.

Bizarre Laws: FLORIDA

  • A special law prohibits unmarried women from parachuting on Sunday.

  • It is illegal to sing in a public place while attired in a swimsuit.

  • Men may not be seen publicly in any kind of strapless gown.

  • Having sexual relations with a porcupine is illegal.

  • It is illegal to skateboard without a license.

  • It is considered an offense to shower naked.

Lake County challenges individuals
to commit to greener lifestyle

More than 130 Lake County employees and residents took the 2008 Earth Day Challenge.

With four laptops set up in the rotunda of the Lake County Administration Building, individuals completed the online exercise. The challenge encouraged individuals to commit to living a greener, healthier and more environmentally friendly lifestyle by pledging to do a series of actions at least once during the next week.

Respondents chose which of the 20 green initiatives they thought they could complete this week as part of the challenge. The actions were split into four categories: Water Conservation; Energy Reduction; Reduce, Reuse & Recycle; and Green Transportation. Respondents had the opportunity to receive reminder e-mails of the initiatives they chose to complete. The Top 10 most popular selections from the challenge were:

  • 10. Use washable rags instead of paper towels. Using old rags, which are probably lying, around your home, to clean up messes not only saves a few bucks on new paper towels but also reduces waste.
  • 9. Barbecue once this week. Outdoor grills use less energy than electric kitchen stoves. They also keep heat out of the house, lowering air conditioning costs.
  • 8. Learn to recycle. Encourage your family to recycle soda cans, milk jugs, glass jars and plastic bottles. For more information, call (352) 343-3776 or log on to www.lakecountyfl.gov, keyword: recycle.
  • 7. Replace one light bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb (CFL). An investment of about $5 can save hundreds of dollars — and a lot of energy — over the lifespan of these spiral-type bulbs.
  • 6. Unplug cell phone when it is done charging. Once the phone is completely charged, it is just wasting electricity. Also, unplug your charger when you are not using it because it will continue to drain electricity.
  • 5. Rotate your car tires on a regular basis. Keeping tires inflated to the right PSI and rotated regularly saves fuel.
  • 4. Drive sensibly. Aggressive driving, such as speeding, rapid acceleration and braking, wastes fuel.
  • 3. Power off electronics. When not using televisions, computers, video games or radios, remember to turn them off.
  • 2. Run the dishwasher only when it is full. This measure helps reduce water and energy use.
  • 1. Don't waste water. For example, when brushing your teeth, remember to turn the water on only when needed.
