Summertime always brings warmer temperatures, but the off-shore breezes
coming in from the east and the west help to cool Central Florida. There
are also a lot of very “cool” activities and events taking place during
these warmer months.
For example, there are several boat tours that operate all year. Capt.
Jerry offers comfortable charters with BBQ lunches. There are sunset
cruises, Silver Springs Nature Tour, and fishing charters for those who
want to explore the “real” Florida. Adventure Tours provides a full-day
narrated riverboat tour to the Silver River from the Harris Chain of
Lakes, starting in Umatilla. Blue Heron Cruises provides a peaceful and
sheltered, fully narrated nature cruise of the famous Dora Canal during
the month of August, leaving from Tavares.
Another not-so-cool activity for its participants, is the Nation’s Top
Sprint Triathlon Series that begins on July 11 at Clermont’s Waterfront
Park. This event involves a .25-mile swim in Lake Minneola, a 11-mile
bike along the rural roads of Lake County, and a 3-mile run through the
streets of Clermont. During the weekend of July 22-25, Mt. Dora will
celebrate “Christmas in July”, including blow up snowmen, penguins, and
Santa will appear at Donnelly Park. Also, on July 22, the Lake Louisa
Cycling Series occurs, in which athletes participate in circuit races of
18-28 miles in Clermont.
A different type of excursion is the Wine and Cheese Train. It operates
from March to November and is hosted by the Wine Depository. They offer
wine tasting events with the Orange Blossom Dinner Train on the fourth
Sunday of each month, leaving from the Mt. Dora Station.
Music lovers might enjoy the festivals that are held frequently at the
Lakeridge Winery. For example, on the weekend of June 18th, the Winery
is holding their 13th Annual Harvest Festival, which includes arts and
crafts, live music, wine, food, grape stomping and tours. On August 21,
the Winery will again provide a day of music, vinyard tours and wine
tasting. Every Saturday in July, the Winery offers live music and wine
tasting. In nearby Cassia, Blue Grass and Country Music will fill the
evening air on July 24th and again on August 14th. In August, the First
Friday Street Fest is held in Eustis, including live entertainment,
theme foods and fun activities for the kids.
For those interested in theatre, there are several excellent theatres in
the Central Florida area. The IceHouse Theatre presents “A Thurber
Carnival”, that includes sketches, scenes and story telling from the
humorist James Thurber. It is held every weekend during the month of
July. The State Theatre in Eustis presents the musical “Best Little
Whorehouse in Texas” during the last two weeks of July, and Leesburg’s
Melon Patch Theatre will present a drama, “Jenny Kissed Me”, a play
written by a talented, local playwright, from July 16-July 25.
