Resident Reflections

Educated Consumers Give Pringle High Marks for Quality Construction: Part I

While living up north, we used to hear the expression "An educated consumer is our best customer" on a TV commercial for a clothing company. This concept can be applied to any purchase to ensure you are getting the right price for a quality item.

When we decided to retire in Central Florida and began looking for the right developer, we knew very little about home construction. "Do we build a vinyl or stucco home? Is it best to use plywood or what we called "particle board"? What type of foundation is supporting the home?" These and other questions swirled around in our minds as we moved from one development to the other.

Zellwood Corn Festival

Can you imagine husking over 200,000 ears of corn and melting 1-1/2 tons of butter?

That is the challenge faced by the 1000 volunteers needed for the annual Zellwood Sweet Corn Festival, held during Memorial Day weekend in May. A tradition for over 30 years, thousands of visitors pour into Zellwood for arts and crafts, live music, amusement rides, and, of course, the flavor of locally grown sweet corn. There is also a bike and car show for riding enthusiasts.

The job of preparing the corn begins a few days before opening day, when area volunteers begin to husk the corn. The corn is then held in refrigerated trucks until it is cooked by the Fraternal Order of Eagles in a special cooker called "Big Bertha" Ð it can cook three ears of corn per second, or 10,000 ears per hour. The corn is then buttered and distributed with the help of the Talako Indian Dancers and Boy Scout Troop #639.

Those Who've Come Before You...

Charlie & Jean Axtell

Charlie and Jean Axtell, who have been residents at Legacy of Leesburg for almost five years, love the "great outdoors" and enjoy visiting parks, beaches and other areas where nature has expressed its beauty.

The Axtells decided to settle in Legacy because of the well-planned lots that demonstrate the community's nature theme. They were also pleased by the excellent choice of lots, the ability to customize the home during the design phase of construction, and the availability of building a block and stucco home. Charlie described how the floorplans were not "chopped up" little rooms, but spacious rooms that gave the feeling of openness. For this reason, the Axtells made very few changes to the original house plans, even though they had the option to do so.

The Culinary Couple

A Third Place Pub & Cafe

A "first place" is your home, where you live and sleep, "second place" is where you work, and "third place" is where you go to relax and enjoy home-cooked meals and musical entertainment. Bill Ferree's "A Third Place Pub & Cafe" opened in April of this year at 12 E. Magnolia Ave. in Eustis.

The large, spacious restaurant is located in a historic building that dates back to the early 1900s, when it was known as Ferran's Department Store. The decor combines old brick, stucco and wood with an upstairs loft and a separate bar area.
