GARDEN CLUB Ice Cream Social

Back to Articles

Enjoying a self-made ice cream sundae on a sunny Sunday afternoon is a great way to meet and socialize with other members in a community.

This was the approach that the Legacy of Leesburg Garden Club used recently to inform residents about the goals and activities of the club. Guests lined up to get their scoops of ice cream, and then proceeded to a table that had syrup, sprinkles, whipped cream, bananas and other toppings to make the ultimate sundae.

As residents enjoyed their ice cream, Joyce Strunc, President of the club, described the many activities that the Garden Club members have been doing since the club was formed almost two years ago. Joyce runs the club with the help of Sharon Bowden, Vice-Pres.; Rose Fernandez, Treasurer; Pat Black, secretary; and Diane Gatto. Projects in the past include a calendar sale, help at the local County Fair, trips to local gardens, and a long list of guest speakers that covered such topics as Native Plants of Florida, Herb Gardens, Bio-scaping, Garden Pests, and Flower Arranging.

Future projects on the list for the Garden Club include a plant raffle and sale, a Yard of the Month award, donating gardening books to the community library, and providing printed information to the residents on basic landscaping.

One of the biggest projects of the Garden Club is the installation of a butterfly garden which was planted last year. This garden is maintained under the guidance of Melina Joy Miller, who is a very active member of Legacy. As residents enter the main resident gate, they are treated to an area of plants which are known to attract many types of butterflies. As time goes on, additional plants are expected to increase the area of the garden. This garden enhances the many nature trails that help make Legacy of Leesburg a beautifully designed community.
