LAKESIDE INN |
|
For 125 years the Lakeside Inn, located on beautiful Lake Dora, has been a popular, historical place to stay for visitors to the Mount Dora area.
In 1883, some “founding fathers” of Mount Dora’s first families felt the need for a hotel in the area. In 1924 Charles Edgerton bought the hotel and owned it for the next 55 years. He and his partners built the Olympic-sized swimming pool as well as two guest houses, which were dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge in 1930. The Edgerton’s entertained Governors, Senators and other famous people such as Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and President Eisenhower.

MOUNT DORA’S ICEHOUSE THEATRE |
|
The Mount Dora Theatre Company, located at the Icehouse Theatre on N. Unser St., is celebrating its 60th year of providing community theatre.
The theatre was started in an abandoned icehouse in 1948, and ten years later, the City of Mount Dora purchased land for the company to erect the building that is still in use today. This popular venue offers 6 live adult plays each year, plus occasional specials and a children’s schedule of 3 plays per year plus a summer camp. This past July, a group of children ages 9 to 15 presented the play “Wind in the Willows” on July 23 -24, with Justin Webber accompanying on the piano. Classes for children are given after school, weekends and during the summer. Some of these performances are presented to guests in local nursing homes and senior communities.

PIGLET’S PANTRY – A PET OWNER’S PARADISE |
|
If you own a dog or cat, visiting Piglet’s Pantry is a “must” on your next visit to Mount Dora. Carla & Edson Pereira have been baking and selling gourmet, All-Natural Dog Treats since 1997. All of the treats are taste tested by their own dogs. Nothing passes without their approval!
In case you’re wondering how the store got it’s name, in 1995 Carla and Edson adopted a shy, sweet, 2 year old Greyhound named Piglet who was being retired from a racing career. (There are many unwanted dogs today in local animal shelters or breed specific rescue groups. A percentage of the bakery and store’s profits are donated to these organizations placing unwanted animals in “loving, forever homes”.)

ORIGIN of MOUNT DORA |
|
The history books tell us that the area, first settled in 1875, was originally known as Royellou from the first names of Roy, Ella and Louis, children of pioneers Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Tremain. Because of the difficulty in the name’s spelling, the Post Office asked that it be changed. In 1883, the name Mount Dora was used. The “mount” is for the hill on which the downtown sits, and the “Dora” is the name of the large lake located next to the town.

SEGWAY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA |
|
There is a new, state-of-the-art way to tour areas such as downtown Mount Dora…the Segway Personal Transporter, which resembles a scooter. This new technology is becoming the latest method for an individual to move from one place to another. Dean Kamman, who invented the wheelchair that goes up and down stairs, the insulin pump and several other medical appliances, is the inventor of the Segway.
At the present time, the Segway (which retails at about $5500) has many commercial uses, and is being used by police, security companies, school campuses, factories, airports, large parking lots (such as at Disney World), and will be used in Bejing during the Olympics.
