There are many different types of museums located throughout Central Florida, but one of the most beautiful is the Appleton Museum of Art located in eastern Ocala.

It was erected on a 44 acre wooded tract of land and was opened to the public in 1987. The museum houses the collection of Arthur Appleton, who over the past 60 years, has managed to collect over 6,000 art objects. Also featured is a large lecture hall and beautiful outdoor garden area used for dining and dancing events. Central Florida Community College owns and operates the museum, also holding art classes for their students.

Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the museum is showcasing a wealth of artifacts and art, some of which have never been seen by the public. This 50-piece anniversary celebration represents the objects collected in the last 20 years, even though the museum’s collection has already increased to more than 18, 000 objects. Artifacts that were discovered in five of the seven continents of world include African, Asian, European, Ancient, pre-Columbian and Islamic pieces. The exhibits include an excellent variety of art forms, such as sculpture, ceramics, African masks, contemporary prints and antiquities.

This anniversary exhibit runs through Sept. 16, and in October, the museum will be exhibiting some of Princess Diana’s dresses.

More information about the museum can be obtained at www.appletonmuseum.org
