Flowers come in all colors, but it seems there are not as many blue flowers as there are reds, oranges or yellows. In the last few years, however, one blue-flowered plant has become quite common and easy to grow in Central Florida.
Plumbago (also called "leadwort" or "sky flower") is an evergreen shrub with semi-woody stems that form a loose, rounded mound 3-10 feet high with a similar spread. It is native to South Africa, and has become a popular ornamental in subtropical gardens both in Florida and in California. It does best in light, sandy soils with good drainage. It enjoys full sun and survives with little watering once established. In addition, it can stand some frost, and if it is killed to the ground, it recovers easily.
The blue flowers bloom most of the summer, spring and fall in various shades of blue. This is the kind of plant that requires very little attention in your garden. It grows quickly, so it may have to be trimmed occasionally to keep from spreading to your neighbor’s yard! Plumbago is a favorite for butterflies and is an excellent choice to grow in the garden areas around your home.
