The Melon Patch Theatre

Back to Articles

A great way to spend an evening with a friend or family member is to enjoy a delicious dinner at a nearby restaurant, followed by a show at a local theatre. A good meal nourishes the body, and a good show provides the opportunity to "get away" from the routines of daily living. During the last few years, Central Florida has experienced an influx of many good restaurants, making it a challenge to decide "where to eat tonight."

Central Florida is also home to a number of excellent theatres which provide a platform for local actors and actresses to "show their stuff". The Melon Patch Theatre was formed in 1951, and was so named to reflect the large watermelon industry that prevailed in the area at that time. Musicals generally run for four weekends, and non-musicals run for three weekends. The theatre is located on North 13th Street in Leesburg.

The Melon Patch Players have just released their 2005-2006 schedule of performances. The season kicks off with SEUSSICAL on the weekends of July 15-29. The show brings to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, such as Horton the Elephant and the Whos of Whoville. The show appeals to all ages.

SOCIAL SECURITY USA follows in September. This Broadway hit originally starred Marlo Thomas and Ron Silver, playing a married couple who are art dealers. The arrival of other family members provides many humorous situations. The season continues with ARSENIC & OLD LACE, CINDERELLA, STEEL MAGNOLIAS, and ends with the showing of GODSPELL in May '06.

Adult tickets are $15, and student tickets are $7. Season tickets are also available. The theatre holds 200, and there are special areas for those with mobility difficulties. For more information, call (352) 787-3013 weekday mornings until 1 PM. [end]
