The upcoming holiday season brings about a
myriad of activities that allow residents and visitors alike to get
together. Each of the towns in Central Florida have their tree-lighting
ceremonies. For those interested in theatre, there are several live
performances that demonstrate the many talents of the local residents.
Sporting events include running marathons, boating races, motorcycle
rallies, a horse workshop, and many other types of competitions. There
are several arts and craft festivals, and for the music lover, there are
several concerts and “music by the lake” performances.
Each year, the list of activities becomes
longer and longer, as more people bring their talents to the small towns
that make up central Florida. There are a number of events that are
conducted over a period of several weeks, so that visitors as well as
local residents can enjoy seeing them.
For example, the Leesburg Center for the
Arts will have over 100 holiday crafters displaying over 50,000 items
during the month of November and into early December. At the Lake County
Historical Museum in Tavares, there will be an exhibit showing the
adventures of Prof. Edgar Banks, the man who was the inspiration for the
Indiana Jones character. Upon his retirement in Eustis, he became a
filmmaker and citrus grower. Beginning November 7th, the City of Tavares
will present an exhibit of vintage citrus crate labels, vintage
citrus-related tools and citrus paintings at City Hall. This unique
exhibit will continue for the entire month, in order to honor Lake
County’s citrus heritage.
Also, during the month of November, visitors
to the House of Presidents in Clermont will enjoy their Thanksgiving
Celebration. A special display of White House China will be on exhibit
for visitors to see as well as a State Dining Room table set for the
holiday season. In fact, you can have your photo taken at the table with
President Bush and the First Lady, just as if you were personally
invited for dinner! In early December, the House of Presidents will hold
a “First Ladies Tribute”. Dresses from the First Ladies Gown Collection
will be exhibited on wax figures of some of the First Ladies of the
past.
On the first Friday of every month
throughout the year, downtown Clermont holds their Arts and Crafts show,
featuring music, specialty shops, classic car cruise-in, live
entertainment and dining. At the Citrus Tower, which is also located in
Clermont, hot rod and classic cars are on display every Tuesday evening
starting at 6:30 PM, along with 50s music and plenty to eat. Heritage
Lake in Tavares provides wildlife tours year round during the morning
hours, and sometimes in the afternoon, and in Eustis, the Lake County
Farmers Market opens its doors every Thursday.
On the second Saturday of every month,
Downtown Groveland holds free concerts at the gazebo on the shore of
Lake David. There is a different sound each month, as visitors will get
to hear blues, bluegrass, brass or barbershop style music emanating from
the Gazebo.
As you can see, Central Florida really
springs to life in the fall and winter months. But what really makes all
of these activities and celebrations so enjoyable is the wonderful
weather that allows us to get out and get involved! There simply is no
better time to enjoy the best of what Central Florida has to offer.
