Those Who've Come Before You...

Back to Articles

When you meet Carl and Nancy Simms of Royal Highlands, you will soon discover that they have very similar backgrounds and interests. Both were born and raised in Iowa, both spent years working in law enforcement, both volunteered at their local church, and both enjoy many leisure activities during their retirement years.

Carl was born in Centerville, Iowa. He completed 33 years with the Sheriff's Department before retiring in 1998. For the next two years, Carl did volunteer work at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport.

Nancy began her law enforcement career as a Booking Officer for the Scott County Jail. She then worked for Iowa's Work Release Program and as a Parole Officer before retiring. Like Carl, she also volunteered for church functions.

The Simms' sons are Chris, who works for a robotic welding company in Iowa, and Matthew, who is employed by the Mona Shores School District in Michigan.

Carl and Nancy became interested in moving to Central Florida after visiting friends who had purchased a retirement home in this area. Impressed by the design of the Royal Highlands community, they purchased a lot and began planning to build their dream home on the edge of the beautiful community golf course.

They chose the Emerald model, and while back in Iowa, Nancy used her computer to modify the original design provided by Pringle Development. For example, they switched the dining area and the kitchen so that the dining area was closer to the main room, and added custom features to almost every room. The modified plan was sent to Pringle's Design Center, and final plans were drawn from their ideas. This custom-design feature was one of the many reasons they decided to join their former Iowa neighbors in Royal Highlands. The Florida weather and the many activities available helped finalize their decision.

Carl and Nancy have become very active in the community since closing on their new home in 2001. Both enjoy weekly games of golf and boating on nearby Lake Harris. They occasionally travel to Siesta Key or Clearwater to enjoy the beaches, and both provide their services at Universal Studios, where Carl works in Guest Services and Nancy in Entrance Operations.

Asked what they enjoy most about being Royal Highlands residents, they will tell you that it is the friendliness of the people. Carl was also impressed by building superintendent Rick Tanner, who "did a fantastic job of keeping us informed during the building process". They are grateful to their Iowa neighbors for introducing them to life in a Pringle community. [end]
