Royal Harbor's Pancake Breakfast |
|
It was early morning in October as the sun
began to peek over the eastern horizon as we passed over Lake Harris.
When we arrived at the Royal Harbor Recreation Center, it was very quiet
outside, but inside the main hall of the center, there was a lot of
activity going on.
Several residents were setting tables and
working in the kitchen preparing for an 8:00 AM opening. It was the
first Pancake Breakfast for the upcoming season, and the core group of
this activity, along with several other volunteers, was making sure that
everything was ready for the oncoming crowd.

The Greenhouse Restaurant |
|
The Greenhouse Restaurant, located on Old Route 441 in Mt. Dora, has a
history as a restaurant in the area for almost 60 years. According to
Lisa Lau, daughter of owners Betty and Carl Lau, the restaurant was
known as Turner's Greenhouse around 1945. At one time, it became a fine
dining establishment, featuring jazz and blues music, as well as a bar
area. It was closed down for a few years until the Lau's purchased the
restaurant 17 years ago, and it has been a thriving business to this
day.
Lisa explained that the Laus, who owned a couple of restaurants in
Melbourne, Florida, were on their way out of town when Mrs. Lau saw the
building and decided to purchase it. They began serving breakfast and
lunch for about one year and then realized the need to add dinner to
their menu.

Resident Reflections: Central Florida Home to Top-Rated Hospitals |
|
Calling for a fire engine or an ambulance, visiting the dentist, and
paying insurance premiums are things we'd rather do without. But when
the time comes to put out a house fire or call for medical help, or get
rid of an aching tooth, we are very glad these services are there.
We recently had a situation which required medical attention. While
enjoying Labor Day weekend with family members, my wife made a wrong
step and injured her foot. It began to swell and bruise, so we decided
to visit the emergency room at Leesburg Regional Medical Center (LRMC).
There were very few people in the triage area when we arrived. We had to
wait for a while, but only because two other emergencies needed quicker
attention Ð a young girl with her arm in a sling who seemed to be in
great pain, and a young family with a small baby that needed help.
