Scott’s Country Market and Corn Maze
A Challenging Combination of Crops and History

Back to Articles

Scott’s Country Market is truly a-mazing! It’s one of the few places in Central Florida where visitors go and expect to get lost. But that’s because finding your way out is half the fun.

Every year for the last three years, Scott’s Country Market in nearby Zellwood has featured a corn maze. Scott’s Country Market has been growing Zellwood corn since 1963, and it is the only family-owned farm in the area that still grows this delicious sweet corn.

Their 1200-acre farm provides a large amount of space for growing plenty of corn and other vegetables. In the corn maze, guests explore thousands of feet of pathways cut through living cornstalks in this life-size maze of maize. It is one of several corn mazes that can be found in various parts of the country, as well as in England.

The Maize Quest’s Corn Maze System is a group of progressive farmers who provide guests with a unique experience for family entertainment, providing both adventure and a challenge as visitors work together to solve the maze puzzle.

Each corn maze has a theme, along with educational displays, games, pictures, and maze navigational stations that help participants find their way. At the Zellwood corn maze, this year’s theme is based on the sacrifices and the accomplishments of our American soldiers.

Before entering the maze, participants are given a flag and a game sheet, which provides directional clues and a story line about our country’s struggle for freedom. The game sheet asks 18 questions about the military, and the answers can be found at different sites throughout the maze. A decoding system is also provided on the game sheet to help those who begin "going around in circles" trying to reach the end of the maze, and "Poppit" clues are provided along the way.

There is a small bridge in the center of the maze where a volunteer is stationed who can assist anyone who needs help through the maze. The flags that are given at the beginning of the maze can also be used to signal the volunteer if needed.

In addition to the large corn maze, there is also a "mini-corn maze" for small children, and a mist maze that offers visitors a refreshing opportunity to cool down in warmer weather.

A newer addition is a rock maze, called a "Labyrinth". The labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness. It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. Labyrinths have been used as mediation and prayer tools.

On November 11th, the Country Market celebrated Veteran’s Day. This event included a flag-raising ceremony, a Hall of Heroes, a parade of veterans, and a balloon release to honor fallen soldiers. It was a special tribute to the brave men and women who have risked everything to defend our freedom.
