Why Waiting For Your Florida Dream is a Bad Idea
by Alan Parrow, President & CEO

Most Americans today might expect to live a little beyond 80 years of age. Let’s face it --- an 80 year life span doesn’t give us much time to do and be all that we can be. We should not wait until near the end of our lives to begin the process of enjoying the rest of our time on Planet Earth to the fullest. This translates into not waiting to purchase that retirement home in Florida because you believe that waiting might result in your being able to find a “better deal”.

When you really think about it, even if you were successful at precisely timing the housing market (which, like timing the stock market, is nearly impossible to do), do you really have to be so ego invested in being perceived as the smartest buyer by your friends (by getting the absolute lowest price at the absolute bottom of the market) that it will prevent you from starting a new, better life today?

DINING WITH THE DOCTOR

“Tell Your Spouse You’re Spending the Night With Us”. No, that is not the title of a movie, but it is the title of a free light luncheon lecture that was given by Florida Hospital Waterman in Tavares on October 9th. This is one of a series of lectures called “Dining with the Doctor”, an educational program that informs visitors about a variety of medical issues.

This lecture focused on the latest research into sleep disorders, and Dr. Ahmed Jalloul described how the problems of sleep apnea are being addressed by modern research. The lecture was followed by a tour of the FHW Sleep Disorders Center that works with patients that are experiencing sleeping problems.

EASY TO GROW FLOWERS

Many homeowners enjoy adding color to their gardens with plants that are hardy and require little care. The Ti plant (pronounced like the word “tea”) is a beautiful example of a colorful plant, tolerant of most soil conditions and will grow in direct sunlight or in shaded areas. In some cases, the stems can grow as high as 8-10 feet.

Ti plants are extremely popular worldwide for their intense leaf colors and leaf shapes, and are very easy to grow in Central Florida gardens. Native to Eastern Asia, the leaves of these plants were used to thatch the roofs of houses, wrap and store food, and were eaten as food or used as medicine. They are known as the good luck plant, and in ancient Hawaii, these plants were thought to have spiritual powers, having been worn by high priests and chiefs during certain ritual ceremonies.
