BREAST CANCER AWARENESS SPECIAL EVENT

Partly cloudy skies and pleasant breezes helped to insure the success of a very special event, Breast Cancer Awareness Event, recently at the Gator Harley-Davidson dealership on Highway 441 in Leesburg.

There were a variety of activities to attract both children and adults of all ages. The Malik family, owners of the Harley-Davidson dealership, wanted to hold an event to demonstrate how breast cancer has affected so many lives. Part of the activities was a show of support for Laurie K., a Pringle employee and mother of two young children undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer. A 33 mile bike run and scavenger hunt kicked off the day with registration at Pringle headquarters in Eustis. The route included six stops and everyone checked in at Gator Harley-Davidson around noon. Most of the volunteers working the booths and activities during the six-hour event wore pink T-shirts that read “Show Your Love for Laurie K” with a Ribbon symbolizing the fight against breast cancer.

ZUMBA EXERCISES

Lakes of Mount Dora residents interested in a complete, full body fitness routine, can now sign up for Zumba classes that are held every Thursday in the Clubhouse.

Zumba combines hypnotic Latin rhythms with easy to follow moves to create a workout that is beneficial to the whole body, as well as a lot of fun! Zumba exercises began in the early 90s, when an instructor in Columbia forgot his aerobic tapes and used his favorite Salsa and Meringue music as a last minute substitute. His “forgetfulness” eventually developed into one of the most popular forms of exercising.

A NIGHT AT THE RACES

Lakes of Mount Dora residents and their guests enjoyed “A Night At the Races” recently. They were able to “bet” on each of eight races that were run during the evening held in their beautiful Clubhouse..

Each participant was given $100 in play money, and they were able to bet between $10 and $20 on any one of the races. There were ten horses running in each race, and before each race, participants would line up at the Betting Booth to place their bets. Based on the betting record, the odds were announced and posted. Winners would line up at the Payout Booth after the race, and losers were asked to turn in their losing tickets at the Loser’s Booth, which happened to be decorated with a black balloon.

GOLF TOURNAMENT

When the golfers were teeing off at the 18th Annual Golf Tournament sponsored by the Home Builders Association of Lake-Sumter recently, they were remembering the many sacrifices that our troops are making around the world.

The tournament was held at the Palisades Country Club in Clermont, and the theme was “Teeing Off for Our Troops” in conjunction with Operation Shoebox. It began at 8:30 AM with the “Shot Gun Start”. Prizes were awarded in several categories; the longest drive, closest to the pin, and a trophy for the best decorated military table. Golfers were asked to donate cash or a variety of items that could be used by our troops overseas, and for those who did, the team was given 2 strokes off their golf score at the tournament.
