The Leesburg Center for the Arts in downtown Leesburg opened in 2000 and has been a vital force in promoting the growth and vitality of the community. Under the guidance of Executive Director, Amy Griffin, the Center provides educational opportunities in the arts for all ages, attracting talented artists and musicians by providing spacious areas for displaying various types of art
The Center hosts the Annual Arts Festival, where thousands of visitors enjoy a weekend of shopping, food and festive arts activities. The Art Institute features an intensive 2 week program for students who would like to learn pottery, painting, sculpting or other types of arts. Its Outreach Program aids in the implementation of arts education in the local schools, and works with the Boys and Girls Club of Lake and Sumter Counties to expose children to cultural arts.
Approximately every two months, the Center’s Gallery provides a different display of works by talented artists. This past year, the photography exhibits included a student art exhibit, a celebration of food in art, floral fantasies, underwater photography, and a study of landscapes.
In addition, several courses are offered by the Center to attract both adults and children. Participants can take classes in such areas as traditional Appalachian Basketry or figure drawing and children can participate in a number of programs. Art parties can be arranged for a child’s birthday party for instance. The children are given an art project with materials, along with the birthday cake, drinks, and balloons for a memorable birthday party.
This past November, a Rustic Landscape Plein Air Paint Out was conducted on a 65 acre ranch in the Silver Lake area, where artists used their talents in a natural outdoor setting, and the results of their work displayed at the Center’s Gallery.
The Leesburg Center for the Arts is a dynamic force in promoting cultural arts in Central Florida. It has an excellent website for those interested in learning more about their many programs (visit www.center4thearts.com).
