Leesburg’s Center for the Arts

The Leesburg Center for the Arts in downtown Leesburg opened in 2000 and has been a vital force in promoting the growth and vitality of the community. Under the guidance of Executive Director, Amy Griffin, the Center provides educational opportunities in the arts for all ages, attracting talented artists and musicians by providing spacious areas for displaying various types of art

The Center hosts the Annual Arts Festival, where thousands of visitors enjoy a weekend of shopping, food and festive arts activities. The Art Institute features an intensive 2 week program for students who would like to learn pottery, painting, sculpting or other types of arts. Its Outreach Program aids in the implementation of arts education in the local schools, and works with the Boys and Girls Club of Lake and Sumter Counties to expose children to cultural arts.

MICRO Flyers Club

It’s not unusual to see a group of people flying model airplanes in an open field. However, it is unusual to find a club that flies model airplanes indoors, as is done at one of the Pringle communities, Highland Lakes.

The Micro Flyers Club was formed about one year ago. Under the guidance of Len Panizza, President of the club, they have grown to a membership of approximately 20 members. They meet regularly at the community’s large recreation center with their hand-built model airplanes, maneuvering them over the indoor track and tennis court arena, sharpening their light plane flying skills. Electronic controls are used to guide the planes from takeoff to landing.

The Gables Restaurant

Downtown Mount Dora offers a wide variety of specialty shops and restaurants, attracting local residents and visitors. One of the favorite restaurants, opened 25 years ago by Edgar Payne, is the Victorian themed Gables Restaurant.

From soups, salads or a “quiche of the day”, as well as daily specials, the Gables has a wide variety of entrees for lunch or dinner. During our visit, we enjoyed the chicken salad and the Quiche Lorraine, and both entrees were served with fresh fruit and homemade rolls. Dinner choices include steaks, Idaho rainbow trout with tomato-caper butter, Cajun seafood ragout with shrimp, salmon and scallops with Cajun cream over pasta.
